Leadership Development for Black Woman-Led Small Businesses

Daily writing prompt
What topics do you like to discuss?

Even though black women in corporate America may be receiving opportunities for professional leadership development, small business leaders are often not investing the time and money for themselves and for their teams, if they have teams. Providing both inspiration and information that speaks to their specific unique needs as black women who are pursuing lofty goals can make a difference between success and failure for them.

As the founder and host of this podcast show, my lofty goal is to be an ongoing resource for the black woman leader who has survived crisis and trauma. My hope is that she can gain more self-awareness and pursue her dream of making a bigger impact no matter the size of her small business. I would love to stay in touch with you about what’s going on with the show. Please join my newsletter email list below.

[New Book] Small Biz Big Impact, But How? 2nd Edition with Journal

Black Women Leaders who own Small/Micro/Solo businesses:

Do you want to have your business make more impact in the world?

Are you a conscious selfless servant but not sure about how you can make a bigger impact?

Even when it’s not intentional, even the smallest drip of water creates a ripple effect across the whole pond. So, “small business” is a misnomer because, with intentionality, you can make a big positive impact on the world.

Get your copy of Coach Donna Marie’s book “Small Biz Big Impact But How?” to see if it may help you. It’s in the second edition now and is available in paperback with an integrated impact journal so you can write your “aha” moments and your questions as you read. If you choose to purchase this book, thank you in advance. Purchasing this book supports the ongoing development of the Plant Your Seeds of Transformation podcast which is hosted by Coach Donna Marie.

Throughout this podcast we have addressed issues that impact the mindsets of black women leaders including perfectionistic tendencies, low self-esteem, and more. I wrote this book because I am well aware that many of us black women leaders have a hard time seeing ourselves as leaders and/or seeing ourselves being able to make big impact when our businesses are underfunded, undervalued, and overlooked. However, there are ways to get around any obstacle, as long as you keep your hope alive.

I hope my book will help you to keep your hope alive.

God bless you.

In this bonus episode 11, I step into the mentor role to share on this topic of losing sleep or neglecting to get enough sleep and how this is tied into perfectionism. This episode will premier at 7am EST on Thursday 6/30/2022

How can lack of sleep be caused by your quest for perfectionism? Ever heard anyone say “sleeping is overrated” or “I’ll sleep when I die”?

Also in this bonus episode, my goal is to provide an update on what to expect for future episodes.

How can black women leaders understand themselves better and make better choices so that they will live more happily and have more joy in all of their relationships? Getting past perfectionism is one of the keys for this, and one thing that can help you get past perfectionism is getting enough sleep.

Ironically, if you’re sleep deprived, it’s highly likely that you have a hard time listening or focusing, and it’s also likely that your brain health and your emotions may also be out of balance.

Watch or listen to this episode to hear about my journey. I hope that you’ll take what I share seriously and make good choices for yourself so that you are getting enough sleep in the future.

QUESTION

Why and how can a black woman leader replace Superwoman as her shero?

Ep 10 Guest: Vaneese Johnson

Watch or Listen via YouTube or Your Favorite Podcast App

In episode 10 of season 3, you will hear from Vaneese Johnson, The Boldness Coach™, as we dig more deeply into understanding what perfectionism can look like for black women leaders, especially for caregivers. Learn from Vaneese about why and how you can replace Super Woman as your Shero.

Also, we discussed…

This is for women aged 40 and over… Shed the ‘clothing’ [literal and metaphorical] that no longer fits. You’re not the same as you were in your 20’s and should not have unrealistic expectations of yourself, nor should you let anyone else put those unrealistic expectations on you.

Plant Your Seeds With This Self-Coaching Tip:

Sometimes you can coach yourself simply by journaling on a consistent basis. Research studies have shown that this can help you stay motivated, especially when you look back at previous journal notes. In this way, you can course correct when you see a pattern emerging that does not align with your goals and/or you can update your goals to align with emerging patterns. Journaling and making adjustments based off of your journaling review can also help you to give yourself more grace when the outcome of your work doesn’t end up looking like what you expected… which is a huge part of letting go of toxic perfectionism.

Episode 2 Topic: How to Understand and Let Go of Toxic Perfectionism

On the Plant Your Seeds Show, we share vulnerably about hard topics to support and bless women leaders who are healing and transforming after trauma or crisis has occurred in their families, marriages, careers, and/or businesses.

~ Donna Marie Johnson, @leadlikeaqueen

In the future, I plan to interview some leaders who have been in your shoes and who are sharing vulnerably, too. So, stay tuned for updates later this year.

For now, you’ll be hearing me share on topics relevant to your journey as a leader.

I am glad to be back for season 3. My time away gave me time to deal with some of my own issues so that I can be a better help to you. One of those is perfectionism… I divorced it. I’ll talk about how to begin understanding toxic perfectionism and how to manage it on this episode. (For background, have a look at the blog article I wrote about it at the link above.)

Key Phrases:

  • Contentment v. Complacency
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Gratefulness
  • Staying Present
  • Love for Self and Others
  • Trusting God
  • Understanding Grace
  • Living from Your Core
  • Complexity

This podcast seeks to dig deeper on this topic of perfectionism than what was shared on that original blog post. What part of what I shared helped you the most? Send me your comment (click here).

Key Scripture – re: Living from Your Core

“I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

~ John 17:23 (NIV)

Key Questions:

  1. What support do you need with understanding how toxic perfectionism is impacting your life and relationships?
  2. Which tools can you use (or use better) to support you in your journey with ridding your life of perfectionism?

Recommended Tools:

  • Notes app (ios/apple)
  • Reminders app (ios/apple)
  • Evernote app (any device)
  • OneNote app (any device)
  • Other apps that you like best

Get support from a coach with learning how to use these tools to help you manage your tasks and reminders as you begin to release toxic perfectionism.
